Heat transfer paper is a special one-sided paper, usually used along with a heat press. One side of the transfer paper is a paper surface, and the other side will contain a printed image.
When choosing the heat transfer paper that will best suit your needs, there are a few options that you should consider:
Will you use an inkjet or laser jet printer to print your heat transfers?
Inkjet transfer paper has a specialized plastic coating that allows the ink from the inkjet printer to soak into the layer, and transfer to your desired surface when you apply heat and pressure. This plastic coating is sensitive to heat and cannot be used in a laser printer. The advantage of ink jet transfers is that the papers are more adaptable to other ink jet printers. This means that if you purchase a new ink jet printer, you will likely still be able to use the same type of transfer paper with your new printer.
Heat transfer paper designed for laser printers usually requires you to research the correct type of paper for your particular printer. This is because laser printers and copiers produce heat while they print, and this could damage your paper and even your printer.
What color is the surface that you are transferring to?
If you want to transfer a design to apparel with dark or bright colors, opaque transfer papers can be used. These papers allow your design to show up perfectly on your dark t-shirts and other materials.
What type of surface are you transferring to?
Heat transfer papers are often designed with the surface in mind. If your fabric is made from a polyester/cotton blend, you may require a different type of paper than would be used for nylon fabrics. Likewise, items such as glass or metal may be transferred to, but would also require specific transfer papers.
There are many places online to purchase heat transfer paper, but here are some favorites:
